USA Softball has received notice of the passing of Hall of Fame coach and U.S. Olympic assistant coach Shirley Topley, who passed away on October 20, 2026, at the age of 92. USA Softball extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends and all who knew her during this difficult time.

Shirley Topley (April 14, 1934 – October 20, 2026)

Born and raised in Hondo, Alberta, Canada, Topley excelled in several sports, including field hockey and basketball, but it was softball where she established herself as one of the greatest of all-time.

As a player, Topley competed with several Canadian teams before being recruited by the Orange Lionettes of California. She also spent two seasons with the Raybestos Brakettes. Between 1967 and 1972, Topley coached the Lionettes to 389 wins, 67 losses and three ties. In this span, the Lionettes won two ASA national titles (1969 and 1970), seven Pacific Coast Women’s League titles and a silver medal in the 1970 ISF Women’s World Championship. Throughout her playing career, Topley competed in 16 ASA National Championships, was a member of five national championship teams and five runner-up teams and earned ASA All-American honors 11 times.

Not only a gifted athlete, Topley would prove to be an extraordinary coach. Topley joined the U.S. Women’s National Team (WNT) coaching staff in 1990 and went on to be part of two Olympic gold medal-winning delegations, with Team USA capturing the top spot at the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 2000 Sydney Games. Her coaching accomplishments also included a World Championship title in 1990 and Pan American Games gold medals in 1991, 1995 and 1999.

USA Softball remembers Coach Topley for her lasting contributions to the game, her dedication to the sport and the impact she made on generations of athletes. Her legacy will continue to be felt throughout the softball community.
