The National Office received notice today that USA Softball former President and Hall of Fame member, Gene Patrick Adkison, passed away at the age of 89 on May 28, 2025.
Born March 8, 1936, Adkison was preceded in death by his wife, Linda and is survived by his daughter, Deborah, his son, Greg, his youngest brother, Louie, his sister-in-law Eva, and many granddaughters, nieces and nephews.
The only three-term president of the ASA (1992, 1999 and 2001), Adkison was named state commissioner for Alabama in 1976 after serving as umpire-in-chief. He has served on numerous USA Softball committees, also chairing the Umpire Committee for eight years.
He served as the Southern Region vice president from 1981-83 and was a member of the USA Softball Hall of Fame selection committee.
Adkison graduated from Samson High School, where he excelled at football. He completed a bachelor’s degree at Troy State University where he played football and tennis on scholarship, going on to finish his Master’s degree majoring in education at Alabama.
Known as “Coach Pat”, Adkison taught and coached in high school before beginning his career as the head tennis coach at Gadsden State Community College where he is now a member of their Hall of Fame.
His passion for sports was unmatched, becoming a referee for college basketball and wrestling along with high school basketball, football and baseball.
In lieu of flowers, Coach Pat asks family to donate to the Early Town Cemetery in Kinston, Ala.
