OKLAHOMA CITY — USA Softball is excited to announce that our biennial UIC Clinic will be held in Oklahoma City, October 24-25, 2025, at the OKC Convention Center. Umpires should plan to arrive on Thursday, October 23rd, for a meet and greet and reception. Q&A with Steve Nelson, Chairman UIC Clinic
Q: How does the UIC Clinic directly impact an umpire’s growth and advancement within USA Softball?
A: The UIC Clinic is where we train the umpires who train other umpires throughout the country. During the clinic, umpires are introduced to USA Softball’s mechanics, game management, playing rules, and more. Those attending are exposed to every aspect of umpiring. We welcome umpires who are not UIC trained, but we are hoping to one day become one.
Q: What sets the UIC Clinic apart from other training opportunities for umpires?
A: Our other training opportunities include national umpire schools and camps. The UIC Clinic allows us to reach more umpires, at all levels, and provide them with a very intensive two-day curriculum. There are two aspects of the clinic, the learning aspect and the camaraderie aspect, like connecting with like-minded people who share your passion for our sport, or possibly someone you have worked with in the past at our National Championships. The clinic also gives the umpires an opportunity to meet national staff members and to hear their philosophies on umpiring.
Q: What can first-time attendees expect when they attend the clinic?
A: They can expect a good time and a great learning experience. They can expect a very intense couple of days studying and learning while gaining an overall understanding of the intricacies of umpiring and obtaining the tools that will help them develop and progress. They will also have the opportunity to be around many other like-minded people and to learn from each other. They will have the ability to set goals for themselves and to gain an understanding of what they would like to accomplish in their careers. The clinic is a great opportunity for umpires to come together and develop the skill sets necessary to achieve their goals.
Q: What kind of topics are typically covered in breakout sessions?
A: We will have sessions on game management, working as a crew, video training, mechanics of umpiring, and more. We will be increasing the number of topics we cover and introducing lots of new learning material that has not been used in the past.
Q: Why is it important for umpires to stay current with new rules and technologies?
A: The game is always advancing, and it’s important for us to stay current and be a part of that advancement to avoid falling behind. We are supposed to be the leaders in our sport, and the best way to do that is by being current with new rules and technologies, and adapting to the changes.
