USA Goes Extra Innings For 1-0 Win
FULLERTON, Calif. – The fans at the Judy Garman Classic got their money’s worth as the USA Women’s National team went nine innings for a 1-0 win over No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette as part of the KFC Bound 4 Beijing Tour in Fullerton, Calif. Jenny Topping (Whittier, Calif.) led the team with an RBI going 2-for-2 while Cat Osterman (Houston, Calif.) threw 11 strikeouts for her third win of the tour.
Monica Abbott (Salinas, Calif.) threw three no-hit innings before Holly Tankersley hit a single to shortstop in the fourth. Tankersley never made it into scoring position as she was thrown out at second by catcher Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.), who had two caught stealing on the game.
Although no runs were scored until the 9th inning, there were several potential USA scoring threats through the game. The team juiced up the bases, including a single by Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.), in the first but a fly out left three runners stranded. In the third, Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country, Calif.) was robbed of what would be her fifth homerun of the tour when the centerfielder snagged reaching over the fence to bring it back in.
Cat Osterman (Houston, Calif.) came in to work the second half of the game after Abbott worked four innings. Abbott finished with seven strikeouts, allowed no earned runs and gave up no hits.
Jenny Topping (Whittier, Calif.) put up the third hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh with a shot to right field. Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) came in to pinch run and would be batted over to second off a sac bunt by Flowers. Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.) came into pinch hit with two outs against her but was caught looking to send the game into extra innings.
Entering International tie breaking rules, Cormier was placed on second but would shortly be caught stealing at third by Topping who entered into catch in the fifth. The team allowed no runs to score and entered into the bottom of the eighth.
Since she was last out of the seventh inning, Lowe entered the game at second base. A sac bunt by Watley moved Lowe to third but a pop up by Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) and a groundout to shortstop by Bustos sent the game into nine innings.
After keeping the Ragin Cajun off the board in the top of the ninth, Kelly Kretschman (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla,) reached on an error by the leftfielder. Andrea Duran (Selma, Calif.) laid down a sac bunt to put runners at second and third. In the facility where she was an All-American, Topping came through with an RBI single to centerfield to plate the lone run of the game.
Osterman (3-0) was perfect in her performance and now has 55 strikeouts during the Bound 4 Beijing Tour.
The team will wrap up competition at the Judy Garman Classic tomorrow with a 6:00 pm/PT game against New Mexico. The team will travel this weekend to Oklahoma for their Oklahoma City stop of the Tour. They will face Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Depaul beginning on March 24th and wrapping up on March 26.
